Health and Safety and Environmental Manager

Grugliasco plant is located in Torino (Piedmont-Italy) and produces high quality seats for the Premium brand Maserati (Quattroporte, Ghibli and Levante).Production is articulated in different areas including assembling, gluing, sewing and welding and the delivery to the Costumer is managed according to JiS mode (Just in Sequence).Operations currently involves about 470 employees.



Basic Function:  Provide leadership in implementing and maintaining regulatory and Lear requirements of safety, environmental, sustainability and ergonomics programs. The Health and Safety and Environmental Manager is responsible for partnering with the operations team to execute company safety policies and ensure compliance with all applicable local and regional regulations.  This role leads continuous improvement initiatives to reduce safety risks in our processes to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.  The Health and Safety Manager is responsible for building trust and confidence with the production employees and influence positive change. 


Key Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Technical/Scientific subjects. Specializations on Environmental, Health, Safety and Ergonomic topics is a plus

  • Minimum 5 years safety experience in a manufacturing environment

  • In depth knowledge of Italian H&S (Dlgs 81/08) and Environmental laws, regulations and requirements as well as of management system standards, e.g., OHSAS 18001, ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and work close with the team and Central EHS Dep. to maintain the certifications

  • Qualification as Head of Prevention and Protection Service (RSPP)

  • Experience as internal auditor and H&S, Env. trainer

  • Lean manufacturing tools knowledge

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office

  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines, result and detail orientation.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral

  • Proven ability to perform short and long range planning

  • Ability to effectively work with all levels of employees from shop floor to Top managers

  • Ability to enlist needed cooperation in implementing corporate goals and regulatory requirements

  • Proven record of strong leadership and empowerment efforts

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills & project and program management skills.  Strong passion for driving improvement thru EHS. Ability to influence others.


Specific Duties

Responsibility for environmental and safety program of plant of 500+ employees, analyze trends to provide guidance and technical advice and lead in implementing solutions in the area of safety, environmental, sustainability and ergonomics to ensure employees are provided a safe working environment and ensure environmental requirements are in place to protect the environment and keep facility in compliance with all applicable requirements 

Play, in accordance with the HQ Environment and Safety Dep. and the Corporate guidelines, an active role in management, implementation, and overall culture of employee engagement, Lear leadership model, continuous improvement, and adherence to safe, efficient, regulatory compliant, and consistent environmental practices and conditions, also through the WCM tools (Heinrich Pyramid and stratification of events, S-matrix, etc.). Maintain environmental permits up-to-date, maintain data, prepare and submit various environmental reports to the appropriate authority

Conduct audits and maintain and complete inspections and updates for all environmental and safety programs

  • Ensure emergency response occurs as required

  • Perform daily walk-thru of production and logistics area looking for hazards

  • Attend / lead safety committee meetings

  • Attend daily production and/or plant manager meetings

  • Ensure incident reporting continues as procedure directs

  • Assist on Work Comp claims/questions

  • Respond to requests by Plant Manager

  • Respond to requests by department leaders and HQ Environment and Safety Dep.

  • Involve Safety Union rappresentative (RLS - Rappresentante dei lavoratori per la sicurezza)


Conduct both safety & ergonomic related risk assessments for risk control, directives, equipment, industrial hygiene, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), chemicals, emergency drill, and regulatory compliance

Effectively maintain close working relations with local Authorities, coordinate consultants and external suppliers connected with his/her area

Collect, maintain and provide information to HQ EHS on environmental and safety programs.

Lead implementation of sustainability projects at the plant to reduce energy consumption, reduce waste generation, and increase recycling.  Maintain and monitor energy, waste and water data and other metrics at required frequency

Lead the plant safety committee in the ergonomic evaluation of plant manufacturing tasks with an emphasis on collaboratively working with manufacturing engineering to implement sustainable controls that will eliminate or mitigate the identified risks.  Actively participate in plant based Kaizen Projects to ensure that the recommendations for change are based on sound ergonomic principles, body mechanics and efficiency. Provide continued training support to new safety committee, continuous improvement, manufacturing engineering and production to ensure continued use of ergonomic tools and training 

Leads change internally to comply with all aspects of Lear’s Lean manufacturing 

Identify company safety/Environmental required training needs.  Complete matrix to ensure all training is completed in a timely fashion to ensure compliance. 

Develop annual facility safety and health goals and communicate those goals to members of the management team and facility. 

Participate in new process or layout reviews including process hazard analyses.  Assist in development of operator safety training.

Conduct ergonomic analysis of key areas and recommend/implement new procedures.

Promote safety and health awareness through internal company memoranda, newsletters and specific training programs. 

Understand safety and health regulations.  Advise Human Resources Manager of regulatory changes with which the facility must comply.

Monitor work related injuries, near miss, unsafe acts and unsafe conditions and illnesses, including investigations, conduct root cause analysis. Assist with corrective actions where needed and follow up to ensure timely implementation.

Analyze injury data and spend significant amount of time on production floor to identify and drive needed safety improvement projects

Participates in the Process Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) providing the information in order to reduce the potential critical issues related to safety and environmental
