Job Description

As a member of the automation team, the SCADA Ignition Developer will be responsible for supporting, implementing, and developing ignition standards, pipelines, databases, and interfaces while driving innovation across Lear, globally.

The SCADA Ignition Developer will design, develop, test, and support HMI and SCADA applications built on the Ignition platform. These applications interface with process instrumentation, PLCs, enterprise data pipelines and OITs across our manufacturing plants, and run on both on-premises and cloud infrastructure with local and remote access. In this role, you will work closely with senior engineers, plant operations, maintenance, and IT to build reliable solutions, help deploy them to the plant floor, and support end users as they adopt new tools.

Responsibilities

• Assume responsibility for projects and ensure they are completed on time, fulfilling all project requirements.
• Work closely with team members and clients to create and implement solutions.
• Write Named Queries and support database design and integration with SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or other databases.
• Contribute to reusable component libraries and scripts across Gateway, Designer, and Client scopes, using version control.
• Support commissioning, FAT/SAT, and on-site deployment, and help train end users on new applications.
• Troubleshoot production issues and assist with performance tuning, backup, and redundancy efforts.
• Create and maintain documentation, including functional specifications, system diagrams, and as-built records.
• Offer technical support and guidance to team members and clients.
• Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement solutions to boost efficiency and productivity.
• Keep current with the latest Ignition developments and be willing to integrate them into projects.
• Maintain a high level of quality and attention to detail in all work.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

• Ability to create Perspective displays for desktop and mobile users.
• Experience connecting Ignition to a variety of data sources and equipment.
• Understanding of ISA-18.2 alarm management and alarm notification in Ignition.
• Ability to develop reports that support compliance and production needs.
• Strong troubleshooting skills and a willingness to learn new technologies.
• Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain technical topics to non-technical users.
• Organized, self-motivated, and able to manage priorities across multiple projects.
• Collaborative team player who listens to user needs and asks thoughtful questions.
• Familiarity with task-tracking tools such as Jira, MS Project, or Excel.
• Travel varies by project; some periods may require up to 30% travel, including occasional international trips.

Education Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Computer Science or equivalent

Experience Requirements

• Requirements

  • 2 to 3 years of hands-on experience developing and deploying Ignition SCADA applications (Perspective and/or Vision).
  • Working experience with Ignition 8.x, as the platform changed significantly from earlier versions.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and Python/Jython scripting, along with the Ignition Expression Language.
  • Familiarity with JSON, CSS, and JavaScript as they apply to Perspective development.

  Preferred Qualifications

  • Ignition Core or Gold certification, or completion of Inductive University coursework.
  • Exposure to OPC UA, Modbus TCP/RTU, MQTT/Sparkplug B, or REST API integrations.
  • Basic understanding of ISA-95/ISA-88 concepts, industrial cybersecurity (ISA/IEC 62443), and IT/OT networking.
  • Ability to read PLC logic (Ladder or Structured Text).
  • Experience working in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
