ASSISTANT MATERIALS MANAGER
LEAR DETROIT – GRATIOT PLANT

 

Organizes and directs those activities involved in the procurement of raw materials, warehouse organization, and the sequencing and delivery of finished seats, all performed to assure plant productivity and profitability. The Assistant Materials Manager is part of the Materials department and reports to the Materials Manager.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Responsible for all material flow into the plant from the point of release to material usage.
  • Coordinate the activities of Materials and other departments: Production, Quality, Human Resources, Finance, IT, Continuous Improvement, and Engineering.
  • Control level of inventory to ensure plant hits its DOH targets.
  • Control releases to minimize obsolescence while supporting customer’s requirements.
  • Act as plant Service Coordinator. Control, maintain, and process all service orders.
  • Coordinate, along with our 3rd Party Logistics Provider, all shipping and transportation needs between supplier, customer, and plant.
  • Responsible for housekeeping of the shipping and receiving departments.
  • Assure adherence to the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Assume Material Manager’s responsibilities in their absence.
  • Assume Materials Planner or Coach responsibilities in their absence.
  • Follow ISO14001 and ISO16949 procedures/processes.
  • Actively participate in high performance work team model.
  • Participate in plant recycling programs.
  • Contribute to the achievement of quality/management objectives by ensuring that correct part numbers are delivered to the line in a safe and timely manner as required.
  • Maintain a presence on the shop floor to coordinate work of materials coaches, team leads, and material handlers and ensure they are aligned with organizational goals.
  • Manage and develop continuous improvement activities pertaining to material handling, storage, and flow.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety:

  • Ensure that prompt corrective action is taken whenever hazards are recognized, or unsafe acts are observed.
  • Participate in regular tours of the plant to observe health and safety conditions and provide positive reinforcement and instruction.
  • Insist that safe work procedures be established, and the employees follow these procedures and apply good judgment to the hazardous aspects of all tasks
  • Evaluate the health and safety performance of subordinate supervisors.
  • Provide the leadership and direction essential to maintain the health and safety policy.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in managing the Materials Coaches/Materials Planners
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organization’s policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BS/BA); four plus years related experience and/or training; equivalent combination of education and experience.
